NDWC Shared Read with the Alumni Book Club
March 25 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Please join the Alumni Book Club and ND Women Connect on Monday March 25 as we read Notre Dame Women Connect’s 8th Shared Read book, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande (2014). We will meet at 7:00pm at Galway Arms (2442 N Clark Street).
Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming the dangers of childbirth, injury, and disease from harrowing to manageable. But when it comes to the inescapable realities of aging and death, what medicine can do often runs counter to what it should.
In his bestselling books, Gawande has fearlessly revealed the struggles of his profession. Now he examines its ultimate limitations and failures – in his own practices as well as others’ – as life draws to a close. And he discovers how we can do better. He follows a hospice nurse on her rounds, a geriatrician in his clinic, and reformers turning nursing homes upside down. He finds people who show us how to have the hard conversations and how to ensure we never sacrifice what people really care about.
Unable to join us on the 25th? Want to start the discussion even sooner? An online conversation via the Shared Read Facebook group will coincide with Lent (Wednesday, March 6 – Wednesday, April 17). By joining the group, readers will be able to post questions and comments as well as receive interesting info about the author and updates/photos from local meetings.
