SUPPORT ’07 ND ALUM – JASON LAWS AS ONE MAN CHICAGO
Posted By: admin on 8/20/2010
1) What is One Man Chicago? 2) About My Charity 3) What Does Winning Mean? 4) About Me
What is One Man Chicago? ONE MAN CHICAGO is a fun, social, and professional event that identifies the
ONE MAN in Chicago who represents the best of Our City from the perspectives
of community involvement, personality, intelligence, and fitness. One Man
Chicago not only puts the spotlight on 20 guys doing great work in the
community, but highlights 20 great community organization.
Both the Winner of One Man Chicago and his selected Charity will each receive
$2500.00. Read below to see how everyone wins!
About My Charity I've selected Catholic Charities on 2 Principles:
1) The organization is responsible for shaping my perspective on Service today.
The charity's mission statement includes an integral component-- human
dignity. By focusing on instilling dignity into the equation for service, we are
better equipped to not only serve, but connect with each other; better
understand the issues affecting others; as well as take larger strides towards
addressing the issues/ cycles affecting the hungry, impoverished, and
oppressed.
2) The charity serves our Chicagoland community excellently. In 2009, Catholic
Charities served over 1 million Chicagoans across various backgrounds. Its
administrative fee is only 8%, meaning 92 cents on each dollar goes directly to
serving individuals, families and communities. In addition, 159 programs in 156
sites (across Cook and Lake counties) operate daily to serve:
-Children's Nutrition & Hunger
-Early Childhood Development
-Homelessness
-Emergency Assistance
-Seniors' Assistance and Living
-Social Services
-Interim Housing for Families
What does Winning Mean?
Winning Means My Charity will receive $2,500.00, which will be used to further
the charity's mission, while serving specific programs, like the daily dinners
served to the homeless in downtown Chicago.
Of course, having the title of One Man Chicago will be great, but I will be even
more ecstatic about the additional opportunity to give back to Notre Dame's
Center for Social Concerns. This Center, partnered with organizations like
Catholic Charities to afford me incredible service-learning opportunities to
explore important facets of service such as the cycles of poverty and social
justice. Through the Center of Social Concerns and Catholic Charities, I have
served across the U.S. and as far as Chiang Mai, Thailand.
I will be donating $1,000.00 of my winnings to the Center for Social Concerns at
the University of Notre Dame.
I'd love to share more with you about One Man Chicago and why I could use
your support, in person. If you're in Chicago, show up to the upcoming Happy
Hours, and let's discuss helping Catholic Charities, Notre Dame's Center for
Social Concerns and Yours Truly take home the title of One Man Chicago!
About Me:
I am a 2007 Graduate from the University of Notre Dame. Living in Chicago for
the past 3 years has been quite an adventure and testament to how amazing
this City and its infinite possibilities truly are.
I began a corporate career at Sara Lee Corporation and Sara Lee Foundation,
working in Community Investment & Philanthropy. Though I enjoyed corporate
giving to numerous service organizations across Chicagoland, my artistic and
creative passions called strongly for a transition. Over the past year and a half,
I've made some great strides in both the Entertainment and Nightlife
Management industries. After Managing a couple venues in downtown Chicago, I
developed and continue to serve a VIP and celebrity clientele. What originally
began as a side passion, training as a Professional Dancer and Choreographer,
has paved the way for rewarding experiences. As an Entertainment connoisseur
of sorts, I choreograph and coach live stage performances for various artists,
ranging from music videos under Warner Brothers to live stage performances at
Lollapalooza 2009 and 2010. The most recent entertainment adventure included
Directing and Choreographing a Commercial and Flash Mob Dance for SEARS. I
am currently pursuing a career as a Director, Creative Consultant, and
Choreographer, while serving as Entertainment Manager for the international
entertainment management agency, ThruConnections.
Chicago is a great city that makes nearly anything possible for those with a
strong work ethic and driven by a vision/ their passions!

Book Signing with Amy Brecount White '85
Posted By: admin on 8/17/2010
Amy's first novel, Forget-Her-Nots, just came out in March from HarperCollins. It's about the language of flowers come magically to life and is perfect for girls ages 11 and up.
The mysteries of Victorian flower lore pervade White’s debut, in which 14-year-old Laurel strives to shape a new life after her mother’s death from cancer. Hoping a change of locale will help her grief, Laurel enrolls in the boarding school her mother attended. Once at Avondale, she discovers a bewildering ability to stir up emotions by creating floral bouquets, and she’s soon in demand by students with a variety of motives. Following the definitions in a serendipitously found book, The Language of Flowers, and reciting her mantra (“Bright cut flowers, leaves of green, bring about what I have seen”), Laurel tries to understand and properly use her gift, while coping with typical teenage dilemmas and uncovering her family’s flower-related history. White aptly renders big and small dramas against the backdrop of Laurel’s struggles with her “flower power,” and deftly walks the line between reality and fantasy without crossing it. A delicate sense of magical possibility and reverence for the natural world help elevate White’s story from a typical prep-school drama into something more memorable. Ages 12–up. (Mar.)

Undefeated Professional Boxer Mike Lee to Have Next Fight in Las Vegas Notre Dame Graduate Takes Professional Boxing World by Storm
Posted By: admin on 8/16/2010
Professional boxer Mike Lee’s next fight is scheduled for Sept. 11 in Las Vegas.
Lee will take on Alex Rivera in a special attraction bout at the Pearl Concert Theater inside of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
“I’m excited about the fight in Vegas,” Lee said. “Being the undercard on a world title fight is incredible. It’s going to be an amazing platform for me to show the progress I’ve made since my first pro fight—I’ve really been working hard.”
Lee’s special attraction bout will take place at Top Rank’s “Battle of the Champions” event featuring Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Orlando Salido. The first bell is at 4:30 p.m. and televised bouts begin at 7 p.m. The “Battle of the Champions” will be broadcast on HBO After Dark.
Tickets are currently on sale for $200, $100 and $50 plus applicable fees. To purchase tickets, please visit the Pearl Box Office, any Ticketmaster location, call 630.400.6380 or go online to www.mikeleeboxing.com. The Pearl Box Office is open Sundays noon to 7 p.m., Mondays noon to 10:30 p.m., Tuesdays noon to 7 p.m., Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays noon to 9 p.m. and Saturdays noon to 10 p.m.
This event is promoted by Top Rank, Inc., in association with Arena BoxPromotion and Zanfer Promotions.
“Mike Lee is bringing a whole new group of fans into the sport of boxing,” said Bob Arum, Top Rank founder and CEO. “He is young and talented and people want to watch him.”
Lee, a Wheaton, Ill., (Benet Academy) native, turned pro in January and has taken the boxing world by storm. Lee competes in the light-heavyweight class and is undefeated in his professional career.
Lee has been training in Houston since early spring with Ronnie Shields, former trainer to Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and other boxing greats. “Mike continues to get better and better,” Shields said. “It’s amazing how much he’s improved just since his fight in May. This kid has so much dedication and works harder at this than anyone I know. The sky’s the limit for him.”
Lee graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in finance. During his sophomore year, Lee won the 175-pound crown with a knockout, stopping his opponent in the third round. In his junior year, he was named junior captain, successfully defending his title, and received Notre Dame’s Boxer of the Year award. Lee was named captain his senior year.
After graduating from Notre Dame, Lee continued to pursue his career in boxing—finance would have to wait. “If I hadn’t gone for this,” Lee said, “I would have always regretted it and wondered what might have been.”
Lee competed in the 2009 Chicago Golden Gloves, where he defeated five opponents, ultimately winning his class.
“My dream is to become light-heavyweight champion of the world,” Lee said. “I’ve never wanted anything more in my life.”
