The Notre Dame Club of Chicago’s Annual Men’s Silent Retreat will again be held the weekend of January 26 – January 28, 2018, at the Jesuit Retreat House located at 420 W. County Line Road, Barrington Hills, Illinois. As in the past, the Retreat is organized by Michael B. Roche, (classes of 1963, A.B. and 1966, J.D.), former President of the Notre Dame Club of Chicago, and former member of the National Alumni Board at Notre Dame.
The retreat will start with a reception at 5:30 p.m. on Friday night. Dinner will follow at 7:00 p.m. and the retreat will end at approximately noon on Sunday. Each retreatant will have his own room, and warm meals are served in the Retreat House’s renovated dining room. From Friday evening through Sunday noon, the retreatants will listen to talks on faith, attend masses and have ample time for individual prayers. The men will also have a chance to seek private counseling from available Jesuit priests to discuss personal problems, and to explore the heavily wooded 70 acres on which the Jesuit Retreat House is located.
Tellingly, the Retreat has grown in popularity with others – due to the high quality of the Retreat Directors and their insights and the unmistakable need among many men to spend some one-on-one time (albeit for only a day and a half) with their Creator. As a result, we have been able to fill the Retreat to capacity with over 70 men each year over the last 10+ years, and we expect to do so again this year. Register now and don’t be left out.
This year our Retreat Master will be Fr. Bob Flack SJ. Fr. Bob, a Chicago native, was ordained at Mundelein Seminary in 1974. He served at several parishes of the Archdiocese before entering the Society of Jesus in 1983. As a Jesuit, he has served as a pastor on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, taught sociology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, directed retreats at the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Washington (Seattle). He taught demography and urban studies for seven years in St. Louis University’s Department of Public Policy Studies. Fr. Flack served on the staff of the Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House, including several months as administrator. He has also worked as an assistant in the Chicago-Detroit Province’s Office of Victim Advocacy. He is currently the Director of Spiritual Life at St. Joseph College Seminary in Chicago.
